?Vintage is an investment in itself. The collectible pieces are more of a challenge to find and are more pricey,? says model Mary Ossanna, owner of Rockin? Rodeo vintage clothing store. ?But as with any collectible these items will retain their value--and more than likely increase in value through the years.?
With such a personal passion--matched by partner Robin Fauser--for viewing vintage as a high-end collectible, it seems fitting Rockin? Rodeo is nestled in La Brea Avenue?s antique row, home of more traditionally elevated antique goods.
Ossanna and Fauser first settled on La Brea and 6th to establish their initial retail venture, Chestnuts and Papaya. The store spawned from Ossanna?s and Fauser?s personal collections of rare and unique products found traveling the world on fashion photo shoots. And later, ?on a buying trip in South America we fell in love with the woven pieces of the native people,? says Ossanna. ?We created, developed, and imported our own line of baskets, rugs, and accessories,? catching the attention of In Style, Martha Stewart, Oprah, Cannes film festival, Home Shopping Network, and Disney.
It was more recently that the friends? ?personal style and interest in vintage clothing became an entirely separate entity,? says Fauser, ?only marked with the same philosophy,? a philosophy founded on sharing a peerless collection of quality and choice products.
?This has become a planet of mass production. The attention to detail and quality have been lost on time and moneysaving manufacturing,? comments Ossanna. ?The methods used in handmade, hand-finished clothing, this is what every designer is searching for,? every designer including the indie and corporate ones who frequent Rockin? Rodeo, along with ?stylists for Shania Twain, Cyndi Lauper, Sheryl Crowe, Anne Heche, and That 70?s Show, [who] return again and again knowing they?ll find the best selection,? picks up Fauser, a stylist herself.
And Rockin? Rodeo?s definition of ?best selection?? Try handbags and glammy glasses by Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, Cartier, and Dior; denim branded by Levi's, Wrangler, and Lee; Fitzgerald-era Acme boots and Mr. Harley Davidson biker boots; barely broken-in leather of East/West, North Beach, Gandalf, and Harley Davidson fame; vintage Stetson cowboy hats; WWII bombers; and then the largest collection of rock tees the West Coast has to offer, from rare Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, and 70?s Rolling Stones, to deadstock US festival, Michael Jackson, and the Beatles.
?A big part of our appeal is keeping our merchandise authentic. We don't mind a small tear in denim or the patina on a pair of 40's cowboy boots. But we understand the need for repair and upkeep from time to time. We offer that care to all leather products: boots, belts, bags, and jackets. Our motto: Don't make it look new!? pitches Ossanna. ?And how frustrating to find a great rock tee only it?s two times bigger than your size? Bring in your favorite-fitting tee and we'll match it. Want to add a little pizzaz to your boots or belt? We?ll design and adorn them with vintage antique studs.?
And soon to be tagged onto Rockin? Rodeo?s definition of ?best selection? is a contemporary line of ?all American, rock-inspired clothing.?
?In summer 2004 we?re launching a line of T-shirts like no other. The perfect cut, fabric and graphics will make the consumer drool,? says Ossanna. ?So much energy and passion for vintage will be put into this collection.?
Yeehaw.
